Sold brand new in Minehead, Somerset on 16/ 07/ 57 and registered YYB 445 to Michael Broom who ran a nursery, and who kept the car for 10 years. On sale it was re-registered AWV 1 in the Taunton area, retaining that plate until 2003 when it became UXG 439. At some stage it spent many years in dry storage after a considerable restoration including a complete respray in its original Birch Grey & Burgundy with some new and re-plated chrome parts fitted at the same time. But the car retains its original red leather interior, plus carpets and headlining, all of which is in remarkable condition for the cars 62 years! The engine compartment too looks as good as when the car was nearly new!
Mechanically the car is excellent and the throaty 2639 cc 6 cylinder engine pulls well and sounds marvelous! The gearbox has the rare floor-change option which we have been told is a specification required by Police Forces in Kenya and the former Rhodesia in the 1950's.(But we cannot verify this!)
The car now leads a sheltered existence on the Isle of Wight and I doubt if it has covered 100 miles in the last two years! It is always locked away over the winter and sees occasional summertime use on outings with the local Austin Owners Club. There is quite a large history file for the car including ownership details going back to the first owner in 1957, original sales brochures and various receipts, the most recent of which is for just under £600 for a set of new whitewall tyres which would not have done 50 miles! A selection of brand new original parts can be offered with the car if required.
If this Austin was a Ford Zodiac or a Vauxhall PA Cresta then I'm sure it would be priced somewhere between £15K and £20K and maybe more! And the A95 Westminster is far more rare! A bargain for someone!
