SUMMARY
Originally supplied by B. K Thomas of Nottingham, and still carrying its supplying dealers window sticker, this is a very rare find indeed; an ultra mileage W201 190D 2. 5, that has led a very charmed life, and as you'd expect comes with an superb service history too (many don't!). I'd go as far as saying this is probably one of the best W201 190D 2. 5 out there.
Having owned quite a few 190D's over the years, the W201 diesel is one of the few versions of the 190's I actually prefer with the manual transmission option, as it allows the driver to get the most from the leisurely performance of the stoic, old school diesel engine. Also that super long legged 5th gear gives highly impressive fuel economy on a long run too, and makes for very relaxed and quiet cruising too.
If you've been looking for one of these, you'll quickly begin to realise exceptional examples like this are becoming all but extinct and even the questionable examples are shrinking in number, as many have now been sold for export.
Now I could write page upon page about this car, but just to summarize by saying its probably among the best, if not the best 190 Diesels I've come across to date, and if you miss this, its unlikely I'll find another as good; there's certainly nothing on the horizon at the moment. Everything about it is just so right, and it still even has that new look and feel about it.
In an ideal world, I really should keep a car like this myself, especially as values are being steadily pushed up by their increasing rarity and the realisation among buyers that the W201 is probably one of the best cars Mercedes-Benz made and that it was also a "land mark" model for the company too, but from a business point of view its far too sought after a vehicle not to sell. So, if you want one of these, go look at the others first, so you can fully appreciate this one.
OLDER DIESEL & PETROL CARS
Let's address the elephant in the room here regarding the future of Diesel and older Petrol cars, which due to the confusion that our government have created with their unclear information, further stoked up and sensationalised by the press, has caused much unnecessary uncertainty, particularly and somewhat unfairly for once popular diesel cars, and to some degree older petrol cars too. You still also have to consider for what you put in, and and what you get out, the diesel engine is still more efficient than electric, hybrid & petrol engines, so I think, still has a future.
Having spoken with quite a few people in "The Know" here's the way both they and I see the future for older cars:
* Diesel and Petrol cars are NOT going to be totally banned by 2040, they're simply going to stop being made, but you'll still be able to drive them if you're lucky enough to be around (and able to drive) then! Also by that time, all these cars will be over 40 years old, so will, by that time will enjoy Classic Status and be both Tax & MOT exempt anyway!.
* Road Tax; anything registered pre March 2001 regardless of engine size and type, will pretty much be left as it is, i. e two bands, one for under 1. 4 litre and the other for over 1. 4 litres. I’m led to believe that any big VED changes to vehicles this old, will be regarded as retrospective taxation, so very unlikely to happen.
* Banning Old Diesel & Petrol Cars from City Centres - This may well come, but who wants to drive in a City Centre anyway; it's awful and very unpleasant, and parking costs a fortune!. However, the parody here is that once a car becomes 40 years old (in the UK) as well as becoming Tax & MOT exempt, it also becomes exempt from both The Congestion Charge and the ULEZ Charge; a policy which will probably be mirrored, as these low emission zones spring up across the country's cities.
* It has to be considered that older vehicles, like this 190D are foremostly classics, and there’s so few cars of this age surviving, that they’re not really regarded as part of the problem anyway, so I think any future hikes in taxation rates will come more particularly for post March 2005, as these are where the main volume of pre- Euro 4/ 5 diesels lie.
* Finally, something that is conveniently ignored by the "Green Element" among others, is the fact that a vast proportion of a vehicle's Carbon Footprint is in it's initial manufacture, so by their very nature drivers of Classic Cars are doing their bit by using their classic and not buying a new car instead, which would have to be made, using up precious resources and creating unnecessary pollution.
MTSV CLASSIC MERCEDES
MTSV (an abbreviation for Mark Taylor Specialist Vehicles) was born out an incurable and lifelong obsession for anything with four wheels on it, especially those carrying the legendary Three Pointed Star. Established by me, Mark Taylor in November 2005 when the Classic Car market was in its infancy and long before “everyman and his dog” had jumped on the Classic Car bandwagon. Specialising in Classic Mercedes from the late 1970’s, through to the 2000’s, I also frequently have the odd foray into other quality classics and sometimes even modern cars, however the qualification is always that it has to be interesting, and/ or just a little different; my theory, which has served me well so far, is that if I like it, someone else probably will!
My main specialisation is the legendary Mercedes W201 190 and Mercedes W124; I firmly believe these models were about as good as cars got in terms of sheer, teutonic quality, and believe them to be the best cars Mercedes have ever made. I’ve built up a substantial knowledge of both the W201 190 & W124 over many years, which I’m always happy to share, and have recently contributed to a W201 buying guide written by Julian Parish. I also have extensive experience of the most of the Mercedes models within my “band of interest” namely the W116, W123, W202 & W203 C-Class, W208 & W209 CLK, W210 & W211 E-Class, W126 & W140 S-Class, R170 & R171 SLK and the R129 SL-Class. Obviously as time goes on later models are coming onto my radar too.
MTSV has always, and will always focus on quality rather than quantity, and in doing so has earned, and continues to maintain an enviable reputation among its many customers both in the UK and abroad, many who are now three, four and even five times repeat customers, some of which have become good friends too. I’m also listed in the Mercedes Club Directory as a recommended business and I’ve also had several of my rarer cars featured in the motoring press too.
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have. As such I have many repeat customers and new customers that have been recommended via word of mouth…the ultimate accolade for anyone in business. To read more, see my website at - details above
Any other questions, please feel free to contact me via the details on my website. I'm a firstly and foremostly a true car enthusiast of many, many years, and a Mercedes Club Member, so it's a pleasure to meet and speak to like-minded people.
Finally, I'm situated in Keighley, West Yorkshire (Postal Code Area BD21) which is approximately 11 miles from Skipton, and 20 miles West of Leeds.
Thanks for reading my advert!
