1934 Austin 16/ 6 Berkeley Saloon - in excellent condition
Austin introduced the ‘Sixteen Light Six’ in 1927, based on the chassis of the well-established ‘Twelve’ model. A variety of different coachwork styles were available and the car sat between the Twelve and Twenty hp models in the Austin range. Powered by a 2. 25 litre engine, which, in common with other Austin models used a cast iron crankcase with detachable cylinder block, the Sixteen Light Six became known simply as the Sixteen by 1930.
By 1933, when the car offered here was produced, the Sixteen ‘Berkeley’ saloon was an established and popular motor car. Visually it could be distinguished from the 12hp model by the badge on the radiator, proclaiming ‘Austin Six’.
The example we offer here was first registered in Devon in May 1934 and, as such, is one of the last of this model prior to the introduction in August 1934 of the re-styled 16 and 18 hp models, with the cowled radiator and enclosed spare wheel.
A small number of these cars were fitted with the Hayes automatic transmission system; however, this was not to prove a success and only two surviving cars still have this original transmission. Most Hayes gearboxes were removed by Austin dealers and replaced with the conventional 4 speed manual transmission (as with this car).
Restored to a very good standard some years ago, this car has recently benefited from a high-quality re-trim in blue hide and a full re-wire. The engine is very sweet running and the car presents extremely well and is a pleasure to drive. As with all post Vintage Austins of the 10–20 hp range, the car is catered for by the Austin Ten Drivers Club and, of course, the Vintage Austin Register.
The clutch has been renewed, as have the brakes, and the gearbox has been reconditioned. There is also a large touring trunk fitted.
A file of paperwork is included with the car which interestingly has full details of the original Hayes automatic transmission. There are also many bills and sundry photographs.
