Production of the R107 SL ran from 1971 to 1989, with cars produced from 1986 to 1989 known as ‘late’ cars. These facelift models benefited from improved braking and suspension, a new range of engines and some cosmetic improvements. Along with the lower front apron and flat-face 8 hole alloy wheels, these facelift cars also enjoyed new colours, an improved interior and more comprehensive options list. It is these late cars that are most sought after by R107 aficionados.
Of these facelift cars, the 420SL made up just over 2, 000 production units, far fewer than the more numerous 300SL, 500SL and 560SL. This makes a 420SL a very rare proposition.
The smaller displacement 4. 2 litre V8 is a sublime engine, less raw than the larger 5. 0 litre with a more toned down feel to it. A 420SL feels smooth and eager to please, slightly more responsive than a 500SL at slower speeds; whilst being more capable than a 300SL.

Sitting resplendently in the iconic shade of Signal Red, this car looks every inch the icon. Combined with the full black leather interior (including rear seats), here we have a very desirable R107 SL.
Ordered new and delivered in August 1988, this car was specified with an Outside Temperature Gauge, Paint Preservation, and Black Fabric (or sports check). Eagle eyed readers will notice this car now sports a full leather interior, with rear seats included. This was all part of a large improvement program which took place over recent years.
This car has been owned by a true car enthusiast, who spent a significant sum preparing this and one other car for a tour of the NC500 in Scotland. Works at The SLSHOP included a complete new interior, with a total of £25, 000 being spent covering mechanical and cosmetic improvements on the car. Now that the trip has been completed, it is time for this car to move to a new home.
We have known this 420SL for some years, and can attest to the quality of the car as a whole. It really is a fine piece of automotive engineering, and we hope the new owner will continue to maintain and care for this car with SLSHOP.
