THIS is an unbelievably rare car. She is a 1937 Talbot Ten "Airline" sports coupe, so named for its then aerodynamic design and sleek looks. The Talbot Motor Company had only just been taken over by the world famous Rootes Group at this stage and Rootes based the luxurious sports coupe on the chassis of the Hillman Minx Aero which was lengthened for this low, sleek look. It was also known as The Talbot London, a name derived from its crest on the radiator grille (see photo). It was built with an 1184 side valve similar to the Minx but with greater power, knocking out between 35 and 40bhp.
A mere 1748 of these cars were manufactured and it is believed that only around ten have survived.
Since listing yesterday (Jan 2) I have been reliably informed by the owner of another Airline that there are JUST FOUR OF THESE SUPERB CARS LEFT IN THE UK!
The "art deco" looks of this pre-war gem are simply delightful. The absence of running boards, in my view, gives the model the sleek, low lying look. It is a 4-seater, two door coupe. Pillarless also. It came with luxury touches such as leather, wooden dash, "Talbot" clocks and two winding windows per door. One for the main window and another for the quarter-light. Note also the "T" emblems on the rear bumper. Clearly she has been treated to a colour change and so presumably the combination suited the owner at the time. It must have been a good while ago however as the change is noted on the original buff log book. She carries her original Darlington registration. The rear seat has been re-covered although I would prefer it to be in the original matching leather of the front seats.
She starts easily, idles beautifully and drives smoothly through the gears. She has been stored for some while and will doubtless want checking over.
Her separate chassis looks to be in really good order, she has a new (stainless I think) exhaust system and new tyres.
