A design of the famous Giorgetto Giugiaro, the Cinquecento was brought in 1992 to replace the aging Fiat 126.
It was only available as a 3-door hatchback, with a decent drag coefficient. The car was pretty advanced for its time, having independent suspension, front disc brakes, side impact bars and crumple zones.
The model went out of production in 1998 when it was replaced by the Seicento.
The story goes that when the first Fiat Cinquecento’s rolled onto the showroom floor of one local dealership, an eager customer waved a cheque under the head salesman’s nose. “I’d like one of those chubby-checkers please… ”
