EXTERIOR
Finished in Bright Red and equipped with the desirable M Sport Pack (aerodynamic bodykit, sports suspension, etc.), this low mileage Ci Sport certainly has a commanding presence on the road. The vibrant paintwork retains a deep glossy shine and uniform colour across every panel with only a handful of light frontal stone chips and discreet blemishes to report. The car remains nice and straight along both sides, and the black trims throughout still present in great order with no fading or damage to note.
To make this is a truly great example there are a couple of areas that in our opinion would benefit from some cosmetic attention; a small amount of bubbling has started on the leading edge of the bonnet and low down on both rear arches. We also understand that some welding will be required to the offside rear jacking point for the next MOT test (not due until December 2021). We are selling the car on behalf of the current owner who is unfortunately no longer in a position to have any additional work carried out prior to sale. The car is priced accordingly taking these factors into consideration, and as such a low mileage example in desirable Sport guise, this particular 840Ci represents great value for money.
INTERIOR
The interior of the 840 is awash with black Nappa leather, a perfect contrast to the exterior paintwork. The electrically adjustable sports seats have worn extremely well with no damage or major wear to speak of, even to the driver’s bolster, which in this case hints at only very light use. Glancing across the dash, the leather-trimmed steering wheel and gearknob are in excellent condition, and the switchgear is also remarkably unworn. The rear seats appear to have never been sat in, and the footwell carpets are pleasingly still protected by the original BMW mats. The spacious boot area is also clean and tidy, neatly housing the CD changer, toolkit, and spare wheel.
ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION
The 4. 4-litre V8 delivers 282hp and gives the 840Ci a 0-60mph time of just 6. 8 seconds. Considering its large size and hefty power output, the M62 engine is surprisingly economical given its 2. 81:1 final drive ratio; at 70mph the engine turns over at a lazy 2, 200rpm. The under-bonnet area of this particular example presents really well, perfectly in line with the low mileage of 71k. At 65k miles the current owner had all four exhaust manifolds and both catalytic converters replaced which, along with some other mechanical fettling at the time, cost an eye-watering £3, 474 with Barkers Motor Works in Haslemere.
The car has been well maintained throughout its life and has been serviced at regular mileage intervals, the last having been done at 66k miles in 2015. To help preserve the low mileage the car has been driven very little in recent years, and so we would definitely recommend the new keeper having a fresh service carried out. A slight weep from the diff was also picked up on inspection, which again may need attention if the car is put back into regular use.
WHEELS, TYRES AND BRAKES
Filling the arches are 17-inch “Throwing Star” alloys finished in dark anthracite with contrasting outer rims for a very smart finish. There is unsightly no curb marking to speak of, each of the wheels still appearing very fresh indeed. They are shod in good quality tyres all round with plenty of tread remaining at each corner. The brakes have also been checked and are in fine operational condition following a full refurbishment of the front calipers and replacement of the front brake lines. This work was carried out by Barkers Motor Works, the invoice totaling £1, 392. Other recent underside work includes all new front lower suspension arms, front brake reaction arms and bushes, and rear upper ball joints.
HISTORY FILE
This handsome Hellrot example was first registered in September 1998. It has now driven just 71k miles in the hands of only five keepers since new. As detailed above, the current owner has spent many thousands on various mechanical items in recent years. However, to lift the car further some additional cosmetic and mechanical work will be required if it is put back into regular use. As mentioned, the current owner is no longer in a position to have any additional work carried out, and so these factors have been reflected in the price.
The History File is complete with the original BMW document pack, owner’s manuals, stamped service booklet, a raft of maintenance invoices, a spare key, and plenty of old MOT certificates.
Worldwide shipping is available on request.
