A superb example of the famous Land Rover Series 1 80”. We are delighted to have for sale this matching numbers example which was expertly restored in recent years and comes complete with its buff logbook in ready to go condition.
Originally registered on 6th February 1952, this Land Rover has its original 2000cc engine and its original registration number. It is the 1879th home market RHD 80”, built in the 1953 model year production. Unusually for a vehicle of this age, the buff logbook is present and states the owners for the first few years of its life. It was supplied new to John Laing & Son Ltd in 1952 before heading to its second owner in Bedfordshire. Unfortunately, there is a gap in the paperwork between the buff logbook and the 1990s, from which we have a range of invoices and MOT certificates dating up to recent years.
The vehicle has been subject to a full mechanical and cosmetic restoration to a high standard. Whoever carried out the restoration clearly made a point of retaining originality where possible. If parts were beyond reconditioning, they have been replaced with new-old stock Land Rover parts. Where newer parts were necessary, such as the seats and canvas, high quality materials were used which are sympathetic of the car’s pedigree. Further crediting the originality of the restoration, it has the correct door tops, one-piece wings, and no side light in the bulkhead. The tub is very straight with very few dents for an ex-working vehicle.
The engine runs perfectly and starts on the button every time. It drives as nicely as one would expect of a nearly 70-year-old Land Rover and most importantly, always puts a beaming smile on the face of anyone in the driver’s seat!
The gearbox was reputedly checked over by a specialist at point of rebuilt and any outstanding parts replaced. As such, it moves up and down the gears as one would expect and drives nicely. As typical of a Series Land Rover, it has some oil drips if left standing for some time but nothing of any real note. It has a selectable four-wheel drive gearbox which is correct for the era. It also has the original ¼” brake system which is effective, and the handbrake holds as would be expected.
This is an unusual opportunity to own a fully matching numbers, and stunningly restored, Land Rover Series 1. It was obviously restored by a keen enthusiast who knew what to look out for and how to restore such a vehicle. It requires no work, looks to have done very little since being restored and is ready to take to the roads for the summer! The new owner will undoubtedly benefit from many years of hassle-free use, at a price which we think is excellent value for money for such a carefully restored example.
