1933 Austin Light 12/ 4 Drophead Coupe with Dickey by Gordon
The Light 12/ 4 model was added to the Austin range in late 1932. Using the chassis of the 12/ 6, this new offering with an RAC rating of 11. 9 hp was to prove highly successful and was available with saloon, four seat tourer and two seater coachwork. For the discerning customer seeking a slightly more exclusive style, Gordons of Sparkbrook, Birmingham, offered a De Luxe Drophead Coupe. This genre of coachwork was generally known as a ‘Doctor’s Coupe’ as the level of equipment included winding windows and a well-fitting lined hood and appealed to the doctors of the time, with plenty of room for the Gladstone bag in the dickey seat area.
This example is one of three known - two Light 12/ 4 models, and one 12/ 6, so very much of a rarity. It is of very smart appearance in a light grey and midnight blue livery, with light blue leather trim. The hood is in very good order, having been re-proofed recently.
Much care has been lavished on the car mechanically, with an overhaul of the engine, braking system and front axle and steering having been carried out.
A characterful and charming Austin, it certainly attracts considerable interest when out and about.
There are a number of photographs showing the car many years ago, as well as in more recent times, along with a green RF60 logbook which dates back to 1965, attesting to the original registration number.
