It is hard to believe that the classic SL type R107 (Mercedes had started to distinguish between the various types of bodies, previously the models were just named W for Wagen. With the type 107 bodies were divided in R for roadster and C for coupe) now celebrates its 50 years anniversary. The model stayed young and relevant for many years and remains today still a very sought after (and usable) classic. The heritage after the popular Pagoda model was difficult to lift, but the new SL design – of course still executed with a stylish and safe hand – was well received and the production was carried on from 1971 all the way to 1989. So it is fair to say that it was a true classic design Mercedes came up with.
Our example is an early car, produced in March 1972. Sold new in Colorado where it remained with the first owner all the way to the nineties. The car came to Denmark in 2008 where it remained with the same enthusiastic owner who has indeed looked after it. A comprehensive documentation shows the great engagement he had in the maintenance and care for the car.
The car was sold to US before the demand for heavier impact bumpers was introduced and therefore is presented with the nice European chromed bumpers. All US cars were delivered with the even stronger 4. 5 liter engine, which has probably never been above 3, 000 rpm and is virtually impossible to wear out. The car has driven less than 100, 000 miles and everything is functioning very well and tastefully.
Our example was never restored and is still largely wearing its original paint and original interior, which is still in almost as new condition! The color combination is a quite rare triple black, meaning that paint as well as interior and soft top is black. And it goes without saying that also the hard-top is black. In addition the car was delivered with the following options: Heat isolated windows, central locking, electric windows, Becker radio and an automatic antenna. Mechanically the car is extremely well looked for and serviced and has been optimized and maintained at a high level. The complete history and work carried out is methodically documented. The car passed MOT in November 2020 without any remarks.
There are other – also cheaper – examples for sale on the market, however our example is the nicest we have ever seen and will make the new owner proud and happy for every trip.
