Spitfire 4 Mk 2 – Body Off Restoration/ Stunning
The Triumph Spitfire was introduced at the London Motor Show of 1962. The stylish body was designed by Giovanni Michelotti and the running gear was based on the Herald. Although more expensive than the Midget/ Sprite the design, linked to good performance, proved extraordinarily successful and the Mk2 followed in March 1965. This is the rarest of all Spitfires with only 34, 000 manufactured during a two-year production run and today good examples are rare and highly prized.
At Milestone Classics we travel thousands of miles seeking out exceptional cars for our discerning customers and were delighted when we uncovered this exceptional Mk2 Spitfire that had had just two owners in the last 40 years.
Purchased in 1993 by an engineer as a “minor refurbishment & enjoy for the summer” the project finally resulted in a three-year full body-off restoration exercise. All corrosion was removed, new (stanpart) panels fitted as necessary, engine rebuilt, car rewired for safety. all components inspected / refurbished / replaced as necessary, and interior given a full makeover.
On the road the car drives as good as it looks with good acceleration through the gears and just the right sound from the exhaust. I really like the original instrumentation in the central binnacle where the speedo was reset to ‘zero’ once the project was completed and just over 4, 000 miles have now been completed.
Colour was a personal choice. The final decision by the lady of the house was a dark British Racing Green as the couple lived nearby to the BRM factory - it really does set the car off perfectly. Today the bodywork is stunning, and the interior looks like a two year old car.
These early Spitfires have a genuine charm and simplicity that was lost in the later models. Ready for new adventures the Spit really does need to be viewed and driven to fully appreciate the craftsmanship employed during the restoration.
