The Jaguar E-Type, also known as XKE was produced between 1961 and 1975.
The E-Type was a revolutionary car in design, driving characteristics and aesthetics; it was ahead of its time. Its price was lower than that of its competitors' class cars and this helped sales which, in the 14 years it remained in production, reached 70, 000 cars. In 2004, the US magazine Sports Cars International ranked it first among the Top Sport Cars of the 1960s. Since 1996, an E Type OTS first series has entered the permanent collection of the New York City Museum of Modern Art, an award granted to only 6 cars.
In December 1968 the Series 2 was launched, object of sale in this case, with several changes introduced mainly to comply with the US safety regulations, the reference market for this car. The modifications to the engine, adopted by the entire range (European and American), had already been shown in the Series 1 1/ 2 USA; the three SU HD8 carburettors were replaced by two Zenith-Stromberg carburetors to comply with American anti-pollution regulations.
The other mechanical changes concerned the steering, the column was collapsible and you could have power steering; the braking system was also improved with Girling calipers.
Aesthetic changes were introduced:
the headlights were enlarged and placed in chromed seats, the front direction indicators were enlarged and placed under new bumpers which were also enlarged. The oval air intake was also enlarged to make room for the air conditioner evaporator, offered for the first time as an option. The small taillights were replaced by larger ones borrowed from the Lotus Elan S2 and now placed under the enlarged bumper on either side of the license plate holder. Side marker lights were also added.
Inside the seats received headrests and adjustable backrests and a combination of steering lock and ignition key was mounted on the steering column.
