For sale, through JOHN BROWN 4X4 LTD, Land Rover® Series 2 Ragtop in Deep Bronze Green (1960).
Petrol 2286cc. MOT exempt. Tax Exempt. Rear Bench Seats. Heater with front demist. Weber Carburettor. Recent Canvas. Spare in Rear. Early Series 2 – just the 3517th made. Just 4 former keepers since 1960.
We are delighted to present for sale this Land Rover® Series 2a, in the most popular Deep Bronze Green colour scheme, complimented with limestone wheels. This is a genuine (and early) Series 2 model with many original features – read on below.
Externally, this Series 2 looks pleasingly standard – there are vintage numberplates, wing-top mounted mirrors, a recent sand canvas, rear grabhandles and a set of cross climate tyres, which give good on-road performance without sacrificing too much off-road ability. The bodywork is also straighter than we expect to see at this age, and is finished in a spray-type finish, rather than with a brush, which is good to see. The bumper retains its original galvanised finish too. In our opinion, we think this creates a very handsome vehicle indeed.
On the inside, there are 3 standard seats, along with deluxe matting to the footwells. There are a pair of rear bench seats fitted, along with a spare wheel, which is correctly retained on the back of the bulkhead, as it should be. There is a load mat to the rear floor. It really is a joy to sit in this Series 2 – not only do the original twist-to-open vents survive, but so do the fly screens and the 3 spoke steering wheel, with the horn in the middle. There are also twin individual wiper motors, which were an option in 1960 – generally a passenger wiper was ‘extra’ and so it is great to see both fitted here. There is a heater with front demist which is handy for those winter days – again, often missing. There is a real sense that this vehicle has been well cared for throughout its life when sat in here – and having just 4 previous keepers backs this up very well – just one every 15. 25 years!
Out on the road, this old girl drives just as she should – with the weber carburettor and slightly larger tyres with road-biased tread aiding the driving experience. It delivers a pleasing period drive. Just one thing to mention – the eagle eyed amongst you may have noticed something underneath the car on the front LHS, this is just some ice from where the photos were taken – not a leak, so don’t be concerned about this.
In summary, if you are looking for an early Series 2 which is largely original both on the outside and the inside, then this could be for you. With seven seats, the whole family can enjoy the vintage motoring experience, whilst MOT & Tax Exemption, along with classic insurance, should keep the ownership costs as low as possible for a 62 year old vehicle.
