This Porsche Type 692/ 0 engine was produced in 1958 and was last installed in a 1959 Carrera GT Speedster. A top-end rebuild was reportedly performed by four-cam specialist in the mid 1990s, at which point the engine was found to contain racing camshafts. It was acquired by the seller about three years ago after being removed from the GT Speedster and is equipped with a generator, fan, flywheel, clutch, shrouding, twin Bosch distributors, and Weber 48 IDA carburetors. This Fuhrmann four-cam engine is now offered for sale.
The Porsche four-cam flat-four was originally developed in 1952 under the guidance of Ernst Fuhrmann as the Type 547, which later became the Type 587 and Type 692. This series of DOHC flat-four engines powered a variety of contemporary Porsches, including the 550 Spyder, 718, Abarth GTL, 356 Carrera, and 904.
The Type 692/ 0 features a roller-bearing crankshaft assembly manufactured by Hirth Motoren GmbH and a redesigned engine case with a removable sump plate. Each cylinder head houses dual over-head camshafts driven via vertical shafts with angular gears. This example was produced in 1958 and reportedly received a top-end rebuild by four-cam specialist in the mid 1990s. Work is said to have included refurbishing the cylinder heads and adjustment of the camshaft timing. It was noted at the time that the engine was running RSK-style racing camshafts and Weber 48 IDA carburetors.
The Fuhrmann four-cam engine utilizes two spark plugs per cylinder and twin ignition systems with dual Bosch distributors. Later examples such as this one feature a pair of distributors driven directly off of the crankshaft.
