A rare opportunity to acquire a 1938 Rover P2 Sports Saloon, 53k, with the more attractive and desirable lower roof line than the standard car, finished in a rich dark green, with matching green leather interior. The car has benefitted from a rebuilt very solid chassis and engine, resprayed and retrimmed front and rear inside, new carpets and door cards with the correct detailing including sprung pockets. The chassis has been upgraded from total loss oil lubrication to standard grease nipples.
Overall the paint finish is very good (some minor touch-ups would make it excellent) and completely usable, with good chrome fittings. The interior is excellent, including Jaeger clocks and gauges, all working. The trafficators work too, and have been fitted with flashing orange led festoon lamps in the original fittings. This makes them much easier to spot on the road, but the original lamps may be refitted if desired. Some of the original 1938 tools remain in the sliding tool drawer.
Mechanically, the steering box has been rebuilt, the freewheel works and a stainless steel exhaust is in perfect condition. All four tyres are excellent, and the correct Avons. A battery cut-off ensures there’s no drain when parked for a long period. It also has a modern electric fuel pump for reliability, a working sliding roof, opening front windscreen and a splendidly warm period heater with demister vents.
The car is accepted by the VSCC as a post-vintage thoroughbred, is easy to drive with a standard H-pattern gearshift, and is a cracking example of a pre-war vehicle from a company known for fine engineering standards at the time.
