THIS early Mark III Midget comes with fascinating history. Basically, around 40 years ago, she was THE best Spridget in the UK winning multiple National MG Concours Trophies. There is plenty to read about her in the enormous history file and she is also featured as a concours Midget in the book Spridgets by Chris Harvey.
With an engine rebuilt in 1986 to fast road spec with a stage 2 head, she performs with astonishing oil pressure and is an absolute delight on the road. To give you a rough idea of her value over the past few decades: In 1986, she sold for 5k at the auction house Phillips of New Bond Street London. Three years later, she passed through the hands of a classic car dealer for £5, 800. And then in 2002, she was sold by another dealer for £6595. To give you a better handle on that, 5k back in 1986 is equal to £16, 160 today. My word, she must have been some car!
It would appear that at some stage not that long ago, she found her way into some degree of hibernation and was rescued and re-commissioned four years ago. Mechanically and structurally, she is probably very little different plus I have to say that this really is such a straight classic sports car. Naturally some cosmetic areas are showing the passage of time but - and this is my own opinion - personally I would leave well alone and just enjoy!
My classic cars are motoring antiques. Please do not confuse them with your one-year-old Range Rover. This car, for example, is 54-years-old and so will have quirks and faults in there somewhere. These are not always apparent when buying and selling classics which is what I do. I do not restore them, nor do I pretend that they are concours cars. The majority of them go out as they came in, and I continue to enjoy finding more - a skill which is becoming increasingly difficult as many of you will be aware. They deserve to be taken on as "family pets" and cared for through thick and then. They don't make them any more and demand now out-strips supply.
