The Mercedes-Benz W1116, the first model marketed by the company as the S-Class, proved more than capable of replacing the vaunted W108/ W109 luxury sedans. First released in 1972, the company carefully developed the car over six years and introduced a new "corporate" styling theme that endured through 1993. In comparison to the W108, the W116 looked positively futuristic at the time. Just as with the R107 SL-Class released a year prior, the new car offered a range of Inline-6 and V8 models with increased safety and comfort over its predecessors.
Of the W116s, the most memorable is easily the 6. 9, so called because of the displacement of the V8 installed under its bonnet. First introduced in 1975, the car replaced the 300 SEL 6. 3 at the top of the range. Solely based on the long-wheelbase variant of the W116, the car came equipped with an enlarged version of the 6. 3's M100 V8 the aforementioned motor and a full hydropneumatic suspension. Car & Driver remarked the car was ‘the greatest Mercedes ever built, deified because it struck a valiant blow in the name of performance’. The fastest European sedan at the time and with many optional extras included as standard, the 450 SEL 6. 9 quickly established itself as one of the finest examples of 1970s automotive excellence.
