"Collection by Vermant is delighted to offer you this exceptional Mercedes 280 SL 'Pagode'. The Pagode was the successor to the 190 SL, which in turn was the little brother of the iconic 300 SL Gullwing. Since the 190 SL still had a design and technology from the 1950s, the Pagode was immediately a lot more modern in mechanics when it was introduced, but also in styling. The flowing lines of the 1950s gave way to a more sober and classic design. This made the Pagode a very stylish and popular car at its introduction. In 1963, the first variant of the Pagode came out in the 230 variant. This was fitted with a 2. 3L large 6-in-line engine, which was good for 150hp. Here, customers had the choice of a manual gearbox or an automatic. The following years saw the release of the 250 SL and the 280 SL. The latter was the most high-performance version with a 2. 8L that was good for 170hp.
The 280SL offered here was delivered new in the US on 25 April 1968. Not much is known of the car until May 2016, when the Pagode crossed the ocean and ended up in Austria. at this point, however, the car is in a condition to be restored. A few months later, the Pagode changed hands for one last time and in December 2016, the car is on its way from Austria to the Czech Republic. Here begins a new and important chapter in the life of this Pagode and begins complete restoration. As befits a good restoration, this Pagode has been completely dismantled before being sandblasted. The car was then completely rebuilt from scratch, with no expense spared to restore this Pagode to perfection. All parts for this car have either been replaced, with Niemöller, SLS parts or Mercedes Classic being the main suppliers. All of them are very reputable suppliers in the Classic Mercedes world. Wherever possible, original parts were of course restored to maintain the car's authenticity. For example, the hardtop and hood cover are original and matching to this Pagode. Logically, all invoices of the restoration, the parts as well as a complete photo album are available. This gives a very comprehensive picture of the work that was put into this Pagoda to get it back to absolute new condition.
Today, this Mercedes 280 Pagode still has its matching numbers engine, which logically also underwent a complete overhaul during the restoration. Not only the engine of this car is still completely original, but also the exterior and interior colour. This makes that for the true collector, the car is correct in all areas and being suitable for concours. When restoring, the bar was set very high on the quality of the work. For example, in the interior, the choice was made to replace the original Skai upholstery with a more qualitative leather upholstery. This gives the car's interior a more premium and distinguished feel. The car's steering wheel is done in the same wooden finish as the centre console to complement each other nicely. To increase the usability of the car, it was decided to modernise the radio by adding an aux connection. However, the modifications were only done behind the scenes, to preserve the classic character of the radio in the car.
