HERE is another exceedingly model creeping out from the Martin Howey collection of mega cool classics!
This time it is a 1960 Standard Companion, a rare survivor of an almost totally forgotten model. The Companion began life with the name The Good Companion until the company got to thinking that it sounded a tad too "Biblical" and so it became quite simply the Standard Companion. A proper 4-door (well, 5 in fact) estate car as opposed to a kind of van with windows in like for example the Austin A35 or even the Mini.
Equipped with the early Triumph Herald 948cc engine (remember this was The Standard-Triumph Company), the Companion was a nippy little devil and highly practical. It would not surprise me in the least if many of you reading this are muttering words to the effect of "Never heard of one of them" or "Is this a proper estate car?" Well it most certainly is. And I happen to think it is a most attractive little package in a very appealing two-tone colour scheme. She is really pretty, very solid and comes with an excellent interior. She is also a perfectly happy little driver showing good oil pressure. Go on be different and stand out from the crowd - even at this year's shows. One thing is for certain. There's not too many Companions about these days! Rear bumper could maybe do with re-chroming and is currently painted silver.
This description is based on my opinion of the vehicle, the paperwork that comes with the car and anything I have been told about it. The vehicle is 63-years-old and this cannot be taken as a definitive statement for obvious reasons. As with most classic cars, there may be faults and quirks whilst, almost inevitably, some degree of tinkering and care will always be called for. Such are the joys of owning an antique vehicle and they must be taken within their own context and not compared to modern day cars. They are sold as old, mainly out-dated machines and come without any comeback whatsoever. They are my terms and conditions.
My classic cars are motoring antiques. This car, for example, is 63-years-old and so will have quirks and faults in there somewhere. These are not always apparent when buying and selling classics which is what I do. I do not restore them, nor do I pretend that they are concours cars. The majority of them go out as they came in, and I continue to enjoy finding more - a skill which is becoming increasingly difficult as many of you will be aware. They deserve to be taken on as "family pets" and cared for through thick and then. They don't make them any more and demand now out-strips supply.
