Delightful 1954 356 Pre A ‘Bent Screen’ coupe.

With a production completion date of 14th May 1954, chassis number 53095 was delivered new in the USA.

Last registered in Texas, in 1978, the registration licence sticker is still present on the windscreen. It was ‘rescued’ by a Williams Crawford client in Texas, and then shipped to us here in the UK.

On inspection, our 356 restoration expert, Graham Kidd, was able to ascertain that this was rather special.

Other than an additional layer of dull beige paint, it showed no evidence of ever being restored or accident damaged. The major metalwork components, engine lid, front bonnet, doors, front and rear clips, and floor, all appear original. Only small localised repairs were required.

The quality of the body, the shut lines and panel fit are notably good, and even more evident now it’s wearing its factory Turkish red jacket.

The refurbished interior was inspired by, and carefully matched to the original items found in the unrestored car. Pale beige leather replaces the leatherette and the seat inserts are in corduroy, as per the factory specification. The radio panel in the dash retains its original material.

Born as a 1, 300 cc, the transmission is believed to be the original. The engine was removed many years ago, and replaced with a sweet 1, 600 cc unit, resulting in rather better driving dynamics.

All running gear has been checked, serviced, refurbished and/ or renewed.

This light restoration has rejuvenated an already great 356, allowing for many more years of enjoyment and admiration.
