Vehicle Description
This 1954 Porsche 356 Pre-A 1500S Coupé Outlaw edition is an absolutely pristine example of a very rare and collectible car.
About This Example
Ferdinand Porsche established his reputation in automotive engineering well before the Second World War, yet it wasn’t until the late 1940s that his name appeared on a car of its own. The 356 became that vehicle – a sporty coupe with a rear engine and air cooling, which ultimately helped forge a lasting legacy. Initially produced in Austria before moving to Stuttgart, early ‘Pre-A’ models such as chassis 51451 provide insight into the brand's beginnings and its unwavering dedication to driving excellence.
This specific model was initially sold by Hoffmans of New York in May 1954, initially configured as a 1500S and painted in Adria Blue (R509) with optional De Luxe USA features. In contrast to the more typical 1100 or 1300 versions, the 1500S delivered superior performance, a quality that has been meticulously refined over the years.
The vehicle later found its way into the hands of a distinguished Canadian Porsche collector, who is also a close associate of Rod Emory, the founder of Emory Motorsports. Crafted with exceptional precision, this 356 reflects the ethos of Emory’s creations. Indeed, Rod Emory has verified their contribution and presented it with an honorary Emory badge – a rare and esteemed recognition in the Porsche Outlaw community. A photograph showcasing the car at Emory Motorsports is part of its history file, emphasizing both its authenticity and the high level of craftsmanship achieved.
After being imported to the UK in 2013, the car was further refined for practical use by its former owner. The original engine was swapped for a Super 90 variant, enlarged to 1800cc and now generating approximately 125bhp, mated to the original four-speed transmission. Years of suspension upgrades have resulted in a car that performs exceptionally well on both A-roads and highways – seamlessly blending classic charm with authentic capability.
The specifications are both thorough and original, including Carrera GT-spec drum brakes, a vintage Carrera fuel tank complete with a racing-style bonnet filler, leather bonnet straps, Bosch driving lights, and numerous carefully selected aesthetic and mechanical enhancements. Noteworthy features include a Speedster seat for the driver, a Porsche 550-style mechanic’s seat for the passenger, plexiglass windows, a half roll bar, deletion of the rear seat, racing harnesses, a quad-outlet exhaust, and more – all skillfully executed by esteemed specialists Border Reivers.
Most recently, the car received a bare-metal, glass-out repaint in its original factory shade of Adria Blue – a striking finish that further accentuates its period-correct charm. Today, this 356 serves not only as a nod to Porsche's foundational years but also as an embodiment of the Outlaw movement: a tribute to form, performance, and uniqueness, harmoniously encapsulated in one of the most legendary designs in automotive history.
From a mechanical standpoint, the vehicle is quite remarkable. It has undergone a comprehensive major service by Exotic Sports & Super Car Service located in Eastleigh. Following this, an intricate carburettor adjustment took place at Tom Aireys in Winchester, accompanied by rolling road tuning, which guarantees exceptional performance and drivability. Additionally, a thorough underside coating was applied as an extensive protective measure.
This is a unique chance to own a well-crafted, expertly refined Pre-A 356 that has an established Emory connection, offering a blend of heritage, presence, and genuine driving enjoyment.
