The third generation Honda Magna 750 features the water-cooled V4 engine derived from the VFR750, arguably one of the greatest road bikes ever built. Very much the ‘Cruiser’ the Magna shows its origins the moment you twist the throttle open. It’s a proper power cruiser, holding its place with much larger capacity engines in the power cruiser / muscle bike category.
The Magna is one of the fastest modern classic cruisers you can buy, and remains one of the quickest ones to this day. With just 9360 miles from new, this is a beautiful, original machine and on a Spring Sunday morning ride over the Yorkshire Wolds it ran superbly. The V4 engine is great. This engine, with its racing pedigree is well known for having a flat torque curve. Honda further tuned the V4 in the Magna to have an even flatter torque curve — with a great delivery from 1500 RPM to redline at 10, 000 RPM. It just seems to rev on and on and yet it is smooth and docile at low RPM.
The Magna is a wonderfully comfortable bike. Some call it a flying couch! The controls are just right, the seat is particularly comfortable and the bike handles well. In spite of it pulling like a sportbike with the throttle wide open, the geometry setup is designed for a cruiser. The bike leans over willingly, easy holding a line and it doesn't do anything unpredictable. It doesn't have the rigidity of a modern sportbike but that's not what a cruiser like this is for. Once you reach your desired lean angle, the throttle roll-on is very easy thanks to its predictable torque curve. Beautiful to look at and in superb condition, during my 30-mile test run I found it an absolute joy to ride.
