Thinking quickly, Porsche decided to marry the classic VW-based four-cylinder engine with a restyled G-series 911 body. They named it the 912 E, for Einspritzer, or fuel injection. Sold only in the USA, the Porsche 912E was a limited production before it was replaced by their newest entry-level model, the front-engined 924.
