Description
Apart from its condition, the extensive history and ownership traceable back to new verifies this 39, 000 mile example as one of the best in existence. It is the last phase of the original, unspoiled 1961 shape, but better performing with a 1275cc engine, improved suspension, and more refined with an improved folding hood design, wind-up windows, and more comfortable upholstery. By 1967, the model had lost its slow, budget feel, but none of the original charm, and in terms of quality finishes, it was one of the last pre- BL models with proper 60’s details and produced before the shape was modernized for the 70’s era. It was ‘one-up’ on the very similar Austin-Healey Sprite.
Around 10 years ago, this car was bought as a strikingly solid and original, but jaded time-capsule and disassembled with the utmost care for its engine compartment, underside, and external bodywork to be prepared and re-finished to factory finish to match the incredible interior and amazing chrome finishes. This was with no expense spared, and the project was undertaken by one of the leading names at the top end of the classic car business as a personal, nostalgic project in contrast with his usual Ferrari, Lamborghini and Aston Martin projects. We eventually bought it from him, selling on to a client who has used it sparingly since. Having reacquired the Midget, the carburation has been overhauled, shock absorbers, battery, servicing items etc. have all been replaced. It has been properly prepared and detailed to return it to show condition. The heritage certificate, every V5 and logbook copy from new, and extensive photographs of works in progress are added to the already excellent history file. Unlike a restored former wreck with a new shell, this painstakingly prepared, wonderfully genuine car with exceptional low mileage in the lovely colour scheme of Trafalgar Blue with Black upholstery piped in white, is of the finest vintage within the Midget production run, has never seen abuse or neglect and is a true one-off.
