No other Ferrari has adorned more bedroom walls as this, the distillation of 1980’s automotive perfection. Defining an era of excess and technological advance, the F40 is often regarded as the greatest Ferrari road car ever. Picking up the baton from the already heroic 288 GTO, officially the F40 was built to celebrate Ferrari’s 40th anniversary, but in reality, it was an Italian two-fingered salute to the rival Porsche 959.
Few supercars at the time felt as fast as the F40. This was partly to do with how violently the turbos suddenly ramped-up the power, giving an intensity to the F40’s acceleration that caught the breath every time. Yet while it should have been overwhelming, it wasn’t, the chassis seemingly dialed in to expect the savage delivery.
It was one of the greatest ever supercars, perhaps the greatest and fittingly the last ever car presented by Enzo Ferrari.
With both beauty and brutality in its design, the F40 broke new ground in using the latest lightweight materials, crafted from carbon-fibre and Kevlar, their distinctive weaves partially visible through the scarlet paint. Its carbon-Kevlar tub, meanwhile was bonded to the tubular steel chassis resulting in an extremely rigid structure befitting of a car so explosive in performance both then and now.
Although an out and out road car, the F40’s interior certainly has a very spartan race car ethos, with virtually no creature comforts bar a pair of cloth-covered bucket seats. The dash and central tunnel were covered in felt, but otherwise all the interior materials were the car’s plain or painted composite panels and structure. No wonder the F40 tips the scales at just 1100kg.
There was nothing minimalistic about the engine’s make-up though. A 90-degree 2936cc V8 with twin overhead cams for each bank, four valves per cylinder and twin water-cooled turbos fed by a brace of Behr intercoolers delivering a quoted 478bhp and 0-62mph time of 4. 1sec with top speed of 201mph.
From 1991 onwards cars were fitted with catalytic converters to meet ever-tightening legislation and at this time adjustable suspension became an option. Production was discontinued in 1992 after 1, 311 examples had been completed in five years.
