BCD 554 is the actual car featured on Wikipedia’s page about this, the entry-level model of the mid 1930s Daimler Range. The BSA group also produced both BSA and Lanchester models with fluid flywheel Pre-Select gearboxes, but the Daimler was the most upmarket brand. It was a car beloved of both royalty and the aristocracy. Announced in 1932 it was the first Daimler product for more than two decades with an engine that breathed conventionally through poppet valves. Conventional valve gear had improved, superseding the former advantages of the Daimler-Knight sleeve-valve technology. The car's model name derived from its tax rating of 15 hp. The Fifteen's 1805cc six-cylinder engine was driven via the traditional fluid flywheel transmission and worm-drive rear axle, while other chassis features included a mechanical fuel pump, push-on handbrake and servo-assisted hydraulic brakes. Revamped with a 2. 0-litre engine for 1935, the Fifteen remained in production until the end of 1936, by which time around 6, 000 cars had been sold, making it the most successful Daimler to date. Bodies were coach built by Mulliner and though heavy, were of high quality.
This is a car we expect to be quickly ‘snapped up' as the low price tag belies the quality of its construction, the beautiful way in which it drives and the money invested in it. In 2006, the car was subject to sympathetic restoration by a well-known marque specialist which included an engine rebuild, some paint work, repairs and renovation to the leather, replacement of cooling hoses and rubber trims. All five road wheels were shot blasted and powder coated. New tyres and inner tubes were fitted as were brake rubbers. The engine work included the rebuilding of the cylinder head, including skimming the inlet and exhaust manifolds and a new cylinder head water manifold had to be fabricated. A new camshaft, cam followers, timing chain sprocket, new pistons were fitted and the block face skimmed. All new gaskets and rings were included as was a rebuilt water pump. The starter motor and dynamo were dismantled, examined and rebuilt. The pre-select gearbox was inspected and adjusted. At the time almost £7000 was spent on the car. The engine starts instantly and is very quiet The preselect gearbox is a delight and on behalf of the previous owner we carried out an extensive 40-mile road test, an oil change with new felt oil filter and tappet adjustment. Why then you may ask are we asking less than £10, 000 for this glorious old car? We expect it continue to be reliable and believe it has many years ahead of it, but we think that a light piston slap (only under load) is slightly excessive for this model and for this reason alone we have priced it what we believe, is two thirds of its real market value. This Daimler will suit a buyer who wants a lovely old motor to tootle around in without breaking the bank. It comes with a photo record of the restoration, a buff logbook, an original owners instruction book as well as many photos, invoices and notes. There a written valuation some 20-years old at £15, 000 when it had 48, 469 miles recorded. Having owned many older Daimlers and looking particularly at the general condition of the interior, we believe this to be genuine. The current mileage is recorded as 51, 490
