Description
1950 Daimler DB18 Special Sports Drophead Coupé
An absolute beauty and a wonderful example of post-war British luxury motoring. Daimler was a favourite among celebrities and royalty, with Winston Churchill famously using a related model.
This magnificent example arrived in part exchange, as sadly her previous elderly owner was finding her increasingly difficult to drive.
As described in a 1951 advertisement:
"Swift as a swallow's swoop across the hedgerows… this is the car for the country lover who appreciates beauty and craftsmanship."
One of just 500 produced, this rare Daimler features elegant Barker & Co drophead coachwork, sweeping lines and spatted rear wheels. Particularly unusual is her four-seat configuration, with most examples being two or three-seaters.
Finished in beautiful two-tone metallic silver with sienna brown leather, she presents exceptionally well. The lined duck cloth hood and upholstery are both in lovely condition.
Powered by the 2, 522cc straight-six, featuring an alloy cylinder head and twin carburettors, coupled to the Wilson preselector gearbox with overdrive. She drives beautifully, with plenty of pulling power and smooth gear changes.
Manufactured in 1950, she underwent an extensive restoration many years ago by a Daimler & Lanchester Owners' Club member, but was subsequently stored in his factory premises rather than returned to the road.
Finally recommissioned in late 2024, she unfortunately lost her original registration and was issued with a period-correct replacement.
Her chassis number identifies her as the 106th example off the production line.
Accompanying her is a box file of paperwork, handbook and photographs documenting the restoration.
She's equally as clean underneath as she is on top, with no rot or nasty surprises. We've also recently had the fluid flywheel professionally reconditioned, now operating exactly as it should.
A little marque history:
Based on the post-war DB18 chassis, the Special Sports featured an overdrive preselector gearbox, higher-ratio differential, hydro-mechanical brakes and alloy cylinder head. Built-in jacks, automatic chassis lubrication and a heater were also standard.
Despite her name, she's more of a luxurious high-speed tourer, boasting a seasoned ash frame, deep leather seats, thick Wilton carpets and beautifully crafted woodwork.
Comfortably cruising at 60mph and capable of motorway speeds, her long wheelbase and independent front suspension provide a wonderfully smooth ride. The robust steel chassis is also renowned for its durability.
Costing over £2, 500 new in 1950, equivalent to approximately £110, 000 today.
A rare, elegant and beautifully presented Daimler, offering wonderful craftsmanship, fascinating history and a delightful driving experience.
