Description
Upon its unveiling in December of 1929, the Cadillac V16 took the world by storm. While the American market was no stranger to the V12, the additional four cylinders on a mass-produced engine was most impressive! Reviewers marveled at the car's speed, serenity, and smoothness.
Cadillac would offer this powerhouse, being most exclusive model for a ten year period, being built with two different engine generations / designs. The later engines such as this 1939 example, exhibited its power on the top end, making acceleration from 40 mph to 60 mph effortless, and also incredibly smooth. Even at idle it is difficult to tell if the engine is running.
This V16 Imperial limousine was ordered new by Calumet Farms in Lexington, Kentucky. Highly respected in the world of horse breeding and racing, Calumet horses have now won 8 Kentucky Derby?s and two Triple Crowns. The farm still is active with its heyday in the 1940s - 1960s, and even had a very stylish custom built 1939 GM horse truck, which also still survives.
In later years, this V16 was owned by Mr. W. Beardsley of New York and in 1983 underwent an incredibly high caliber restoration. Hibernia Auto Restoration Inc. of New Jersey, owned by Bob Turnquist preformed the full restoration, resulting in a no expense spared job, done in its original color. During this era, Hibernia was one of ?the shops? for restoration on big classics, and Bob Turnquist was very well known in Classic Car Club of America. Since restoration, this example has led a am extremely pampered life, kept in heated storage.
The car shows tremendously well, and is quite a being done in its original color of Antoinette blue as well as having a blue leather padded roof. The plating on this car is excellent, with a stunning grill, restored at a great cost. The car sports dual side mount spare wheels accompanied by nice art deco styled trim beneath.
The interior is correctly done with a chauffer?s compartment finished in black leather, while the rear is in a stunning blue grey cloth. Accessories include the roll up glass division window, jump seats and working period intercom located on the passenger side of the rear quarters. A vanity mirror is hidden in the driver?s side rear seat sleeve, while both rear disappearing ash trays are complete. The rear window is adorned by a matching shade which can raised or lowered.
Under the hood, this 16 cylinder is also incredibly fresh. The hardware?s plating all shows well, and there is no evidence of use. This example runs and drives well, and attracts a great deal of attention wherever it goes. A very classy V16 Imperial limousine thanks to its original color combination, and is ready to show or tour.
