1973 - Land Rover 1/ 2 Ton Lightweight - 2. 25 Petrol - Fully Restored - Served in NI. (VIDEO WALK AROUND ON MY WEBSITE).
The truck was fully restored by an Ex-Army mechanic over three years, finished in 2023. He does these as a hobby and is currently building another one.
This Lightweight served in Northern Ireland from 1973 to 1983 – with the RA, RHA, King's Own Borders, the Staffords, and others. Some of the unit names are not listed as names but rather as Unit Identification Numbers, and you can guess what that means.
In 2023 an exceptional nut and bolt restoration was completed. Since then, the Land Rover has only been driven around 500 miles.
Although Lightweights were not generally fitted with a hardtop the NI Lightweights would have had a hardened hardtop fitted. Or may have been used in a Recce role with no rear cover. The current hard top is a series 3 but can be removed in minutes and replaced with a soft top.
While maintaining the vehicle's authenticity, some thoughtful enhancements have been added without compromising its original character. Notably, these features include:
1. Rock sliders.
2. Fairey Overdrive.
3. Fairey freewheel hubs.
4. Bluetooth speakers.
5. Rear light bar.
6. 4-point military front seatbelts.
7. Battery isolator and emergency cut-off switch.
These additions not only contribute to the Land Rover's overall appeal but also demonstrate a balanced approach, where practical upgrades are seamlessly integrated, enhancing the driving experience without overshadowing the vehicle's heritage. With the only issue being an intermittent speedo.
Condition Description:
Twin tanks with working crossover switch
Chassis – In excellent condition. New rear ¾ chassis and cross member. Undercoated in 3-1 hammarite primer, 2 coats of hammarite metal paint, 2 costs of hammarite wax oil and 1 coat of Lano Guard.
Suspension: New leaf springs, new heavy-duty shocks, new rear axle straps, new bump stop.
Brakes: New servo, new master cylinder, new slave cylinder, new break pipes, new brake pads and drums.
Clutch: New heavy-duty L. O. F clutch new master cylinder, new slave cylinder, new pipes.
Electrics: Brand new loom, new battery, new relays, and flasher unit. Even the IR switch works as it should. All lights have been rewired. New Distributor with electronic ignition and new Ignition Coil.
Fuel: Twin tanks with changer switch, tanks coated in POR15 Petrol Fuel Tank Sealer, filters on both fuel pipes.
New carb fitted.
Body work: Tub revamped with new galvanised rear floor reinforcement cross members – Doors in great condition with all cavities filled with wax oil. Vent panel great condition with all cavities filled with wax oil. Wings revamped and coated in wax oil.
New door seals.
Hard top: removeable series 3 hard top with headliner.
The Land Rover starts first time and runs very well. Mot/ Tax exempt and cheap insurance, good investment.
