PRINCIPAL FACTS:
This 280 SL was first registered in 1995 and kept in family ownership until it reached its current owner. Used sparingly by everyone, with just 31, 039 miles on the odometer, this Brilliant Silver Metallic 280 SL has always been garaged, which, along with that low mileage means it’s in superb condition inside and out.
An affordable, desirable entry-point into R129 SL ownership, these are great all-round cars, which are increasingly sought after, and difficult to find in such condition. It comes with a comprehensive service history and mileage verifying MOT certificates, as well as its hardtop and the wind deflector in the boot. A few small, easy jobs would take this car from superb to spectacular, but as it is it’s ready to be enjoyed immediately this summer.
CONDITION SYNOPSIS:
With so few miles on its odometer and a history of always being garaged it’s not surprising to find this car is in very good overall condition. The engine and gearbox work as they should, with the car driving nicely.
On close inspection there are some light scuffs on the paintwork, with further nit-picking seeing a small windscreen chip and one of the interior light bulbs failing to illuminate. Nothing serious, or difficult or costly to rectify. The interior is in great condition throughout, with the boot being similarly clean, with the spare wheel looking unused and the boot also containing the car’s wind deflector.
HISTORY FILE:
With its original service booklet highlighting its pre-delivery inspection and subsequent services while the majority of its miles have been covered, there’s a leap between 1999 and 2021, where the car’s been either stored or used infrequently. In that period it’s covered just 1, 000 miles annually, with plenty of receipts from around 2021 onwards to demonstrate its meticulous care since. There’s evidence of Mercedes-Benz Owners Club documents in the history file, which is always a good sign, while the MOTs confirm this car’s low mileage.

Just like the R107 before it, the R129 series SL is climbing in admiration and value and is increasingly sought after by those looking for a useable, modern classic. That’s exactly what this car is, one which you could happily put 10, 000-20, 000 miles on the odometer and have it cost you next to nothing to own doing so. Its low mileage and good overall condition, combined with its keen price make this a hugely appealing occasional, or even daily use SL, which with very little effort could be near perfect.
