PRINCIPAL FACTS:
Registered in 1989, this 500 SL is among the last of the R107 model series, before Mercedes-Benz replaced it with the R129. Having covered 59, 383 miles since it was delivered, it’s done so here and abroad – with evidence of it having lived in Spain for a while. With its desirable 5. 0-litre V8 engine and the appealing Signal Red paint with contrasting beige leather inside, this 500 SL comes with its hard top, and presents nicely. As good as it looks, closer inspection reveals it requires some work to make good, which is outlined below. It’s priced to reflect this work, with perfect condition R107s with similar mileage costing tens of thousands more.
CONDITION SYNOPSIS:
Cosmetically it’s in fine order, but 35 years of use has left some marks. The front bumper trim needs replacing, a new set of tyres is needed as is new wiper blades for the headlights. Small stuff, though checking underneath reveals a bit more work, mostly in relation to consumables like bushes and seals, but more pressingly the front offside chassis leg will require stripping down and rebuilding – it having succumbed to that Spanish sea air and corroded. The interior is in good condition, with the seat bolster showing a bit of wear, and the air vents don’t move as easily as they should, these easy to rectify. The black fabric hood is in good condition and operates correctly, while the hard top is also in good condition.
HISTORY FILE:
This car comes with a weighty file containing plenty of receipts for maintenance, the service book also coming with a satisfying number of stamps highlighting this car’s been serviced as it should be. Among the paperwork is the evidence of its time in Spain, with a number of those service stamps from a Spanish main dealer. Also present in the files are old tax discs, previous MOTs, and roadtest reports from magazines for the 500 SL, that all pointing to ownership by someone who’s enthusiastic about the car.

A car that’s been used and enjoyed by its previous owner, it’s in a desirable colour combination that stands out from the usual silvers the R129 is so often specified in. A car that will require some work to the chassis leg before using, with the majority of the other jobs we’ve highlighted possible at home if you’re a keen amateur mechanic.
