PRINCIPAL FACTS:
You cannot help but applaud the person who specified this 350 SL back in the early 1980s. Clearly a hangover from the hues of the 70’s this car’s mix of Citrus Green Metallic on the body, with a Silver Green Metallic hardtop and Moss Green interior is… absolutely magnificent. Throw in the coloured hubcaps over the more usual alloy wheels on SLs and this 350 SL is a hugely appealing alternative to the normal colour choices we see here. If you want a talking point, or something that’ll always stand out, this is the R107 for you. That said, we understand it’s not for everyone.
It's not been secreted away all its life, either, with its near 150, 000 miles meaning lots of people have had the chance to enjoy seeing this car out and about. It’s done so, though, via just a handful of owners, and those who have been this green machine’s custodians have all been in the same family since it was first imported all those years ago. As such it’s been looked after, and while it’s not perfect, it’s not so far removed from it that its next owner couldn’t make it so with ease.
CONDITION SYNOPSIS:
A car that’s had a life, but in that life it’s been maintained. Inevitably over its near 150, 000 miles there’s some evidence of some wear and tear, but these R107 SLs are tough, so it still looks and feels like a car that’s done a third of that mileage. The areas where it’ll need some attention aren’t too worrisome, either, with things like the radio being a bit iffy, the wipers only operating at one speed and there are some creaks from the suspension. There’s a safety light warning that’ll be investigated that relates to the handbrake, while there’s also some evidence of fluid seepage underneath – though no more than we see regularly here. Cosmetically, aside from some tiny scuffs on the rubber trims, and some light surface corrosion on things like the air cleaner cover – nothing a wire brush and rattle can of paint wouldn’t fix – this is a solid car. While there’s the odd trim piece that’s would benefit from replacing or repair, the interior wears its near 150, 000 miles incredibly well, and unlike so many cars that reach the classifieds this 350 SL rides on some relatively new (three years old) tyres.
HISTORY FILE:
There’s a thick pile of MOTs outlining its history, if not a supporting act of a stamped-up service book. Its condition underlines though that this car’s been looked after, and family ownership of this length does tend to mean it’s been cherished as part of said family. Certainly, a few relatively insignificant jobs aside, it’s all as it should be.
SLSHOP SUMMARY:
It’s not for everyone, admittedly, but embrace the greenness we say as the first owner of this 350 SL did when they ordered it back in 1980. Since then, it’s been in family ownership, and while it’s done some miles, it’s done so with some care and plenty of attention. Very keenly priced, this 350 SL always gets a reaction, turning heads wherever it goes and creating a talking point whenever you stop. It’s a few small jobs away from bringing it from fine condition through good and up to excellent, but that’s for later, as it’s current owner has agreed to have some work done for the buyer, to make it ready to drive out of the showroom now and be enjoyed as is all summer.
