Ferrari chose to introduce its newest four-seater grand touring car, the 456, at Garage Francorchamps' 40th Anniversary celebrations in 1992. Featuring an all-new 65-degree V12 producing 442hp, the new car was a dramatic departure from the outgoing 412, featuring elegant Pininfarina styling that propelled Ferrari into the 21st century. With a top speed over 186 mph and a gorgeously appointed, full-leather interior with power seats and climate control, the 456 offered grand touring comfort with Ferrari performance.
For 1998, Ferrari updated the car with the 456M. A number of subtle changes such as new seats, a revised dashboard, and various styling adjustments improved the overall driving experience. Horsepower and performance remained unchanged, though the firing order was adjusted for smoother running. As was the case with the original 456, an all-synchromesh six-speed transaxle manual gearbox was standard, but buyers could also opt for an automatic transmission should they wish. Overall, the 456 is fondly remembered for its superb driving dynamics and luxurious feel.
