Description

The Austin-Healey 100/ 6, launched in 1956 and produced until 1959, represents an important milestone in the evolution of the Austin-Healey line. It succeeds the Austin-Healey 100, the original model born from the partnership between the British Motor Corporation (BMC) and Donald Healey, a renowned British engineer and driver. The 1957 100/ 6 embodies a modernization of the initial formula, both mechanically and stylistically.

Unlike the 100, which was equipped with a four-cylinder engine, the 100/ 6 adopts a 2. 6‑litre inline-six derived from the Austin Westminster, developing around 102 horsepower in its initial version, raised to 117 horsepower in 1957 with the introduction of the revised 'BN4' version. This change of engine aimed to make the car more flexible and capable, while meeting the expectations of the American market, the main outlet for these British roadsters.

In terms of design, the 100/ 6 retains the elegant, low lines of the previous series, but introduces a few tweaks, such as a slightly modified grille, a bonnet with a raised air intake, as well as an extended wheelbase allowing the addition of two small rear seats, making the model a 2+2. Two main variants were offered: the BN4 with four seats and a four-speed with overdrive, then the BN6 with two seats, introduced in 1958.

In 1957, the Austin-Healey 100/ 6 saw an improvement in performance, notably thanks to a new cylinder head and better fueling, strengthening its appeal to enthusiasts of sporty driving. Although heavier than the original 100, it remains a lively car to drive and faithful to the 'British roadster' spirit.

The 100/ 6 also marks a transitional period before the arrival of the Austin-Healey 3000 in 1959, which would succeed it with an even more powerful engine. It thus occupies a special place in the marque's history, combining the classic charm of the 100 with the beginnings of the 3000's performance. Today, the 1957 model is sought after by collectors for its pure styling, its iconic mechanics and its pivotal role in the lineage of the Big Healeys.

This example was sold new in England in 1957. It is therefore an improved BN4 right-hand-drive version. It is equipped with a hardtop. It is in very good condition and well documented.
