The Quattroporte Series V was presented to an expectant world in 2003 by president of the company, Luca de Montezemolo. It was the first all-new Maserati of the ‘Ferrari’ era and as de Montezemolo said at the time, was the first Maserati on which he wanted to be judged. It was a very bold and confident statement, but he wasn’t a gambling man. He knew this was a fabulous car.

The styling of the new car was by Pininfarina, a company that had last styled a Maserati back in the early 1960s but was also representative of the now symbiotic relationship between Maserati and Ferrari.

The engine was a 4244cc naturally aspirated V8, engineered by Ferrari and a development of that fitted in the 4200 Coupe and Spyder, including a dry-sump and mounted in the front of the car driving a transaxle automated manual gearbox, called ‘DuoSelect’. The engine produced 400 bhp at 7000 rpm with 451 Nm of torque at 4500 rpm – not the kind of specification normally associated with a luxury saloon. As well as giving the Quattroporte supreme performance, with a 0-60 time a fraction over 5 seconds and a top speed of around 170 mph, it also had a very sporting character to complement its elegant exterior.

Soon the old factory at Viale Ciro Menotti started to produce Quattroportes round the clock as demand was high. UK imports began later that year through the Maserati GB sales network, spearheaded by Maranello Sales Ltd in Egham, where this example was sold new to its first owner in January 2005. We have on file the original sales order specifying the exterior colour of Blu Nettuno with beige hide and ‘blondo’ carpet. The car was ordered with a number of factory options including Sport Pack, glass sunroof, rear climate control, CD changer, telephone kit and also the rear entertainment kit. The options totalled over £10000 making the purchase price £81500.

After purchase, the car was initially maintained by H. R. Owen in London but was only used sparingly, and incredibly, eighteen years later, it has only covered just over 10000 miles, all with its original owner, from whom we purchased the car in January this year.

It required a certain amount of recommissioning after a period of storage, but actually surprisingly little and now presents as undoubtedly one of the best examples of the DuoSelect cars left.

Many of the later cars featured an automatic gearbox – probably better on a daily commute, but the DuoSelect is the Quattroporte in its purest, most sporting, and most ‘Maserati’ form, and as a classic buy, those things are more important.

Only a few years ago, the classifieds were full of this era Quattroporte, many with high mileage – well why not, here was a Maserati you could truly use daily. But now things have changed. Those cars have gone and the few that are left have moved into the arena of ‘classic’ ownership. As such, this immaculate example represents an opportunity to start at the very top.
