motodrome offer for sale this fine example of the iconic Ford Escort Mark One Mexico.
This is an original 1972 Aveley-built UK car, that shows ‘Mexico’ on the V5, and has the correct BFAT-prefix chassis number.
As per the photos, finished in Daytona Yellow with black stripes and black RS cloth interior.
As far as we can tell, unlike many it was restored around it’s original Type 49 bodyshell. It’s certainly a Type 49 as it has the right anti-tramp bars and mounts, row of bolts in the boot floor in the right place for the stone guard, and the correct AVO plate on the slam panel.
Purchased by the last owner (a well known name in motorsport) in 2006 as an original unmolested example that was as usual rather tired bodily and mechanically.
He then sent it to a specialist in Devon who completely rebuilt and restored it, and it finally went back on the road in 2015. It’s been garaged since and apparently only came out for shows etc, and hence it’s condition is superb throughout.
Engine wise, it’s the original, fully rebuilt 1601cc motor, but with significant upgrades inc twin webers, hot cam, and 4 branch manifold. We’re awaiting the full engine spec from the previous owner, but in the meantime I can confirm a) it’s beautifully set up, b) sounds superb, c) it makes the old girl absolutely fly.
Previous owner says the original gearbox and 3. 7 diff were also rebuilt.
Odometer reading 6000 miles – obviously this is incorrect and most likely 106000 miles. However we don’t think it’s done more than 2000 miles since being rebuilt.
V5 shows just 4 former keepers, and as above the last owner has had it since 2006.
