This left hand drive Land Rover Defender 90 Ragtop 300 TDi 5 Speed Manual has been meticulously rebuilt in our immaculate workshop in Wetherby, Yorkshire. Available for immediate delivery, the Defender has been completely stripped & rebuilt from the bare chassis, using a huge amount of new parts to ensure it's quality far exceeds the day it left the Land Rover factory in Solihull 27 years ago.
Painted in Santorini Black metallic over a Mocha Tan leather, this Defender 90 boasts a number of significant upgrades from factory. Offered with both a full Black Mohair hood with side & rear windows as well as a Bikini top, it offers the practicality of complete cover with the flexibility to run it without a hood at all or somewhere in between.
The ultra reliable 300TDi engine has been completely rebuilt from the bare block, which was rebored to upgrade the engine capacity from 2. 5 to 2. 8l, making a marked increase on the vehicle performance. It is complemented by the R380 5 speed manual gearbox which again has been totally rebuilt, as were the axles.
Every vehicle built by Retro goes through a painstaking process, to ensure the highest possible quality and this one is no different. Every element of this Defender has been lovingly restored or replaced for new. The full bodywork has been replaced for new with the exception of the windscreen frame. It has brand new wiring looms, brake lines & fuel lines. The axles have been completely rebuilt with new brakes & we have enhanced the suspension set up by reducing the spring height by 1" & upgrading the shock absorbers to Fox Performance 2. 0.
Inside the car we have made some subtle, yet classy changes. A beautiful 15" Moto Lita wooden steering wheel ties perfectly with the stunning Mocha Tan Leather. The brand new heated front seats, are trimmed with a fluted design matched by the cubby box & rear bench seats. The dash has also been retrimmed with our subtle Retro logo running across the right hand corner. With our Retro bench seats there is seating & seat belts for 4 in the back this car is the ideal beach runner with friends & family.
An upgrade on technology inside the car offers wireless Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto, a reversing camera and upgraded sound system with 4 speakers, two tweeters & a removable Marshall Kilburn II speaker. This is complemented by powerful under dash Air Conditioning in the front.
For the exterior styling we stayed true to our name with a classic aesthetic, enhanced by our use of top quality materials. The custom stainless steel front bumper benefits from day light running lights and, as with our trademark Retro grille package, is protected with a gloss black powder coat to tie in perfectly with the Santorini paintwork. 18" steel wheels & a Puma bonnet add a little bit of bulk and aggression without detracting from the intended classic aesthetic. LED lights all round offer better vision at night. At the rear of the vehicle is an ORE 4 x 4 rear step with removable towbar cover & a towbar with single electrics.
This vehicle was built in line with our business objectives, which is to produce a limited number (currently 15) of exceptional quality vehicles each year. The build took over 1600 hours to complete. It trip currently shows 17 miles on the new speedometer but the Defender has undergone over 500 miles of testing prior to that being fitted.
A UK registration document (V5) is supplied with the car showing ourselves (Retro Automotive) as the first UK based owner. A 2 Year/ 40, 000 mile warranty is given with the vehicle for added peace of mind.

Prior to it's full restoration, this Defender 90 was owned & maintained by the Italian Carabinieri, who we understand used it for various types of work in the Italian Alps. Now, after being completely disassembled & fully rebuilt from the bare chassis in our immaculate workshop in Yorkshire, England, it is ready for new adventures.
The vehicle was originally built by Land Rover at it's famous Solihull plant on 20th May 1998 before being dispatched for Italy for it's life in the Carabinieri. Features from factory included Carabinieri Blue with a grey vinyl interior.
It's 1998 build date meant it was teamed with one of Land Rovers most built proof engines ever built, the 300TDi. That was paired with the 5 speed R380 gearbox and LT230 transfer box.
In 2024, after a life catching 'bad guys' in Italy we were offered the opportunity to give it another lease of life. The vehicle was brought to our workshop in Wetherby, Yorkshire, where it underwent the full Retro treatment, taking over 1600 man hours of attention to detail & craftsmanship to complete.
The vehicle now sits proudly in our workshop, polished & ready for delivery.
