1988 Rolls Royce Silver Spirit. Just 44000 miles Concours winner at 2024 RREC (Rolls Royce Enthusiasts Club)
A square-cut, broad-shouldered design, the Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit was styled in-house by Austrian-born Fritz Feller. Although derived from that of the preceding Silver Shadow, the newcomer’s floor pan offered considerable improvements in both ride and handling thanks to its novel Girling automatic ride-height control and gas shock absorbers. By combining copious amounts of sound deadening with the finest quality upholstery, Crewe's engineers kept intrusion from the 6¾-litre V8 engine and automatic transmission to a muted hush (unless the model's reputed 120mph potential was explored). Driver inputs were minimised with power-assisted steering and disc brakes. Only in production between 1980 and 1989, just 8, 129 Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit Saloons are understood to have been made.
Without doubt the most graceful and stately car of its generation (excepting other Rolls-Royces), this Silver Spirit comes to us in an exemplary condition which has received just recognition in the Rolls-Royce world. Elegantly finished in Acrylic Silver Sand with Walnut coach lines, with the interior trimmed in Cream Beige Connolly hide with Dark brown piping, carpets and lambswool rugs, plus burr walnut veneers with boxwood inlays, it epitomises British luxury. A period-correct Blaupunkt Bremen SQR46 radio-cassette player further contributes to the enviable specification. This Rolls Royce is the most desired fuel injection model superseding the previous carburettor models offering vastly improved economy, reliability and ease of maintenance.
Four of the Spirit’s six keepers hailed from the same family, and it has covered just 44, 215 miles from new. It has documented service history from 1997, performed by main dealers and marque specialists. Much money recently spent with a well-respected Rolls-Royce specialist who has undertaken sympathetic renovations, including , detailing and Waxoyling the underside, refurbishing the wheels and mechanical servicing including fitting a new alternator, power-steering rack, hydraulic accumulators, battery and tyres. Consequently, the Spirit was placed second in judging for the Class 16 Trophy at the 2024 RREC Rally, and its restorer was honoured with the Harry Ferguson Wood Trophy.
Appearing with a showroom-fresh interior and virtually unmarked and pristine body and paintwork, this is surely one of the best Spirits currently on the market. Driving exactly as one would expect from such a low mileage prestigious marque, recognised as the ultimate in luxury worldwide.
