1936 Riley 12/ 4 Kestrel
Riley pioneered the fastback concept with the Kestrel, unveiled at the 1932 Motor Show with the 6/ 12 engine, soon followed by a 9hp variant. Its striking ‘Aerolined’ coachwork quickly won admirers, and within a few years several manufacturers had adopted similarly streamlined saloon designs.
The Kestrel evolved through numerous permutations with engine options ranging from 9hp to 16hp, remaining in production until 1939 - by which time Riley had come under the control of The Nuffield Group.
From late 1934 the new 12/ 4 engine became available and proved very popular across the Falcon, Kestrel and Lynx models.
This particular 12/ 4 Kestrel is believed to have spent its entire life in Norfolk, first registered in Norwich in 1936. In the 1950s the engine was upgraded to twin carburettors by its then-owner, whose family retained the car until the current vendor acquired it last year.
It has clearly benefitted from considerable refurbishment over the years and presents very well in its dark green livery. Remarkably, the green interior trim is original and remains in very good condition for a car now approaching its 90th year. Recent fettling has included attention to the braking system and electrical components.
With its twin long-range spot lamps and externally mounted horns, this Kestrel has a purposeful stance and is ready for its next chapter - only being offered for sale due to an impending house move and lack of secure garaging. A sizeable file of bills accompanies the car, many dating back years, along with a correct Driver’s Handbook.
The engine starts instantly, pulls well with good oil pressure, and the Preselector transmission delivers smooth and swift gear changes exactly as it should.
A sporting saloon with distinctive styling and lively performance, the Kestrel remains one of Riley’s most iconic and desirable models.
