1949 Allard ‘M’ Type Drophead Coupé
Founded by the charismatic and highly successful competition driver Sidney Allard, the Allard Motor Company occupies a unique and important place in post-war British motoring history. Born into a family that owned the large Ford dealership Adlard Motors in Clapham, South London, Allard combined engineering ingenuity with formidable driving talent. Before the Second World War he competed extensively in trials, sprints and races, setting the sports car record at the inaugural Prescott Hillclimb in May 1938 in a Lincoln-engined Allard Special. Later that year, together with Ken Hutchison and Guy Warburton, he competed as part of the famous “Tailwaggers” team, achieving considerable success across multiple disciplines.
Following the war, Sidney Allard established the Allard Motor Company in Clapham, producing a range of low-volume, specialist sports cars. These were characterised by lightweight construction, purposeful styling and the use of powerful Ford V8 engines. Alongside the competition-focused J Types and the K Type sports cars, Allard offered more refined road models including the four-seat L Type tourer and the M Type Drophead Coupé. Built between 1947 and 1949, with production believed to total around just 500 cars, the M Type was Allard’s answer to fast, effortless grand touring. Powered by the 3. 6-litre Ford V8, it delivered exceptional performance for the period, coupled with high gearing that allowed relaxed, high-speed cruising.
Presented here is a superb example of the Allard M Type Drophead Coupé, restored professionally to an exceptionally high standard. The car was deemed to be the Allard Owners’ Club Restoration of the Year in 2023, making its debut at the AOC Concours event in Bedfordshire where it attracted widespread admiration. Numerous invoices document substantial expenditure, with restoration work carried out by a highly respected specialist. The history file also includes an original RF60 buff log book dating back to 1957, and the car importantly retains its original Kent registration number.
Finished in an elegant metallic grey that suits the model perfectly, this 1949 example presents beautifully throughout. A new, high-quality hood has been fitted very recently, further enhancing both usability and overall appearance. With its long bonnet, purposeful appearance and prodigious V8 power, the M Type remains one of the most charismatic and evocative British sporting cars of the late 1940s - muscular, engaging and exuding considerable road presence.
Almost certainly one of the finest examples of this iconic marque available today, this rare post-war British sporting drophead coupe is both extremely usable and hugely entertaining, guaranteed to draw interest wherever it appears and to delight its next custodian.
