Land Rover Series 1 86" Soft Top 1955 Nut & Bolt Restoration
A rare opportunity to acquire an exceptionally restored and very desirable 1955 Land Rover Series 1 86".
On offer is a 1955 86" Land Rover, this is number 4696 home market RHD model built in 1955. Originally supplied new to Norburys of Malton Limited, Malton, North Yorkshire. First registered 11th May 1955.
This is a stunning example in Dove Grey with Blue Wheels and Interior.
Inspired by the US Army's wartime 'Jeep', developed in haste and intended for short-term, small-scale production, the Land Rover would defy its creators' initial skepticism. Rover bosses, the Wilks brothers saw the need for a tough, four-wheel-drive utility vehicle to serve the needs of the agricultural community in the immediate post-war years, but the Land Rover's runaway success took the company by surprise. Continuously developed over the course of more than 78 years in production, the supremely versatile Land Rover has proved itself adaptable to innumerable civilian and military roles. It was a sad day for 4x4 enthusiasts when the last Defender model rolled off the Solihull production line in January 2016; the Land Rover's successor is keenly anticipated.
This Series I example has been subject to a full nut and bolt restoration carried out by the previous owner. There is a fully documented history file with photographs and receipts for the restoration. The restorer has used many of the well known quality suppliers for the restoration. Ensuring he used as many original parts that came off the vehicle were possible. When replacement parts were required new old stock items were sourced and fitted. To try to keep the vehicle as original as possible. We recently fitted the blue front and rear bench seats. The vehicle has also just had the new sand canvas. We have also fully recommissioned the vehicle as it had not been on the road for a few years. Work included fitted all new wheel cylinders, replacement oil seals, new exhaust system, two new swivels, full service, all fluids changed.
Immaculately presented and to original specification, the engine has been extensively rebuilt using genuine parts. The transmission likewise has been fully reconditioned. The vehicle is fitted to a new galvanised chassis. Bodywork is mostly original, with some reproduction panels used where required. The body was re-sprayed in dove grey, while the interior received new seats, controls, and paintwork. The body cappings, windscreen frame and other steel components were all sand blasted and re galvanised. A new original-specification braided wiring loom has been installed.
The restoration includes the correct single rear window canvas which is correct for a 1955 model, the correct dome headed rivets were used, to ensure this vehicle was restored as close to factory specifications as possible. Additional extras include a oil pressure and water temperature gauge and tudor heater.
Almost all Series Land Rovers we have had drip a little oil, some quite a lot, UHW 673 is the exception though no drips of oil to speak of even after standing for days in the same place.
The steering is as it should be and the vehicle doesn't wonder on the road like some series vehicles do.
The vehicle is tax and mot exempt.
This Land Rover has obviously been cared for and cherished by its previous owners. They took the vehicle to many shows. It is a fantastic example that requires no work and is ready to use and enjoy.
