Introduced in August 1968, the Jaguar E-Type Series 2 shared the same swooping silhouette as its predecessor; a car which none other than Enzo Ferrari had proclaimed the most beautiful in the world. American safety legislation meant that the newcomer did without glass headlamp covers which while less aesthetically pleasing did make nighttime driving more relaxing. Engine cooling was significantly improved too thanks to the provision of an extra electric fan for the radiator and the bonnet’s enlarged air intake. Uprated Girling disc brakes all round resulted in superior retardation, while re-designed seats provided more support. A more evolved design than the Series 1 and significantly different in character to the V12-powered Series 3 which supplanted it, the Series 2 could be had in Fixed Head Coupe, 2+2-seater or Roadster guises. All were powered by Jaguar’s race-proven 4. 2 litre XK DOHC engine allied to a four-speed manual gearbox (though, automatic transmission was an option for the longer wheelbase 2+2-seater models). A mere 3, 786 Fixed Head Coupes were built to left-hand drive specification.
