There are very few classics capable of making even the most serious collector smile before they have even turned the key. The Citroën Méhari is one of them.
Registered in 1975, this Méhari has been owned since August 2017 by Ray Hillier, co-founder of Hillier Hill, one of the UK's most respected independent Rolls-Royce and Bentley specialists.
By his own account, Ray was deciding between this car and an Audi RS2 when he chose the Citroën instead, telling Classic & Sports Car in March 2025 it was "for the sheer lunatic value." He bought it sight unseen from Spain, and it did not go entirely to plan: "the floor was clearly an optional extra that wasn't included," as Ray put it, before having the car shipped home to Buckinghamshire.
The engine's identification tag, stamped "Citroën Vigo," confirms the car was built at Citroën's plant in Vigo, Galicia, one of only a handful of factories worldwide entrusted with building the Méhari.
Back at Hillier Hill, the car became something of a labour of love. In 2018, two of the firm's craftsmen rebuilt it with a comprehensive range of new components, including a complete replacement ABS body and interior. Originally red, it now wears
Beige Hoggar with new blue trim, and the steel chassis was found to be in good condition and tidied up as part of the rebuild.
The speedometer fitted to the car is not original, so the mileage, currently a little over 64, 000, is offered not warranted. What can be said with confidence is that very little distance was covered between MOTs during Ray's ownership, consistent with light, occasional use.
The car has no outstanding finance, no insurance loss, and is correctly registered in the DVLA's tax and MOT exempt Historic Vehicle class.
