Ariel Arrow 250 – Registration 368 PYB
A very smart and highly distinctive example of the Ariel Arrow 250, finished in an attractive black and ivory/ white colour scheme and retaining the unmistakable styling that made these lightweight Ariels so unusual in their day.
The Ariel Arrow was introduced around 1960 as the more conventional, less fully enclosed sister model to the Ariel Leader. It used the same innovative pressed-steel frame concept and the same 247cc air-cooled two-stroke twin-cylinder engine with 4-speed gearbox. Ariel’s Leader and Arrow range represented a radical departure from the company’s traditional four-stroke motorcycles, and by the early 1960s these models had become the mainstay of Ariel production.
From the registration 368 PYB, this appears to be an early-to-mid 1960s machine. From the photographs, the bike presents very well overall and has clearly benefited from previous restoration or refurbishment. The black upper bodywork contrasts nicely with the ivory frame, mudguards and enclosed fork sections, while the chrome rims, exhaust and brightwork give it a very clean period appearance.
Visible features include the distinctive Ariel pressed-steel chassis, enclosed front suspension, deeply valanced mudguards, long dual seat, chrome spoked wheels, full chain enclosure, classic tank knee pads and Ariel badges. The engine and transmission cases appear clean and presentable, with the bike looking substantially complete.
The Arrow is increasingly appreciated today because it represents one of the most unconventional chapters in British motorcycle history. Unlike many lightweight British motorcycles of the period, the Arrow used a compact twin-cylinder two-stroke engine and unit-construction gearbox, giving it more refinement and performance than many contemporary commuter machines. The Arrow remained in production into the mid-1960s before Ariel production was absorbed further into the BSA group.
Condition
This example forms part of a private motorcycle collection and has not been in regular recent use. It presents in good overall cosmetic condition, with some age-related marks and patina visible on close inspection, but remains a particularly attractive and characterful classic Ariel.
As with the other collection motorcycles, it is being offered sold as seen. Regardless of its current running condition, we recommend that the purchaser carries out a full service, mechanical inspection and general recommissioning before road use, including checks to the brakes, tyres, fuel system, electrics, controls and other safety-critical components.
