The Porsche 996 was the first 911 to be completely redesigned and little was inherited from its predecessors. It features a quite innovative design and also marks the beginning of the use of water cooled engines in the 911.
The Turbo version of the 996 was introduced in 1999 at the Frankfurt Auto Show. The engine was a 3. 6 with 420 horsepower, derived from the engine used in the GT-1 cars that won the Le Mans 24 Hours race in 1998. It had 4-wheel drive and was available with a 6-speed manual or Tiptronic 5 .
