motodrome are pleased to offer, GB140, a 1998/ S reg Land Rover Defender 50th Anniversary Special Edition, as usual finished in Atlantis Metallic. Possibly the best 50th currently available anywhere.
One of the rarest, most iconic, and most civilised Defenders ever made, the V8 coupled with the autobox, in the 90 body will go anywhere and tow anything, and look fantastic anywhere.
We’re told that GB140 was one of only 2 50th’s that were factory-sanctioned as softtops – apparently the other one is in Australia. Frogs Island 4x4 were commissioned to convert them to soft-tops for evaluation, but on submission Land Rover decided not to proceed, and they were finally produced, as you know, with the CSW style body.
Of course, being a factory car there are no issues of unsuitable parts, wrong gearing, badly engineered conversions etc. Totally glitch – free!
This one emerged in late 2014 from a full mechanical and body restoration by Derek Allfrey, and a full custom interior retrim by CSK, and the results are simply stunning. We sold it to the last owner in 2015, and he’s looked after it meticulously, always garaged it, and apparently never taken it out in the wet.
50ths are fitted as standard with automatic transmission, anti-roll bars, air conditioning , six seats, factory Safari rollcage, cubbybox, alarm/ immobiliser, lowered rear bulkhead, NAS rear step, all of which this retains.
However, body-wise, apart from a wonderful repaint in the correct Atlantis Blue including colour-coded front bumper and grille, air vents, mirrors and rear crossmember, this one is equipped with: KBX grille/ light surrounds and vents, daylight running lights in the front bumper, LED lights all round, steering guard, tomb raider style sidesteps, side-opening tailgate. The rollcage and rear step have been powder coated in Pewter.
The blue mohair hood is in first-class order.
Interior-wise it’s fitted with a pair of leather/ alcantara heated Recaro seats in the front, and 4 high-back Exmoor Trim seats in the back, in matching trim. Further upgrades include luxury carpeting and colour coded decking to the load area, piano black door cards and centre console trim (also leather trimmed) , KBX dash console, Momo sports steering wheel, heated screen, electric windows. All topped off with a very high end Alpine stereo system with integrated satnav and reversing camera.
But it’s crowning glory for me are the mechanics: fitted with a 2014- built John Eales fully-balanced 4. 6 V8 with stage 2 heads, Kent H200 cam, tornado ECU, headman long pipe Hi-torque headers, and bespoke stainless exhaust with cats fitted, it reputedly produces 290bhp at the flywheel, and 310ft lb of torque, and performs astoundingly but with utter tractability – it will snuffle around town all day.
Running gear wise it has Terrafirma pro-sport suspension lowered 1in, EBC slotted/ drilled discs and yellow stuff fast road pads, topped off with a lovely set of JE Engineering 18in alloys (with spacers) shod with Michelin Dyamaris 285/ 50R18 tyres.
The chassis was fully refurbished by Derek Allfrey including the fitment of a new rear crossmember, before being fully Dinitrolled. Last serviced 500 miles ago.
Odometer reading just under 90000m, but it’s dome less than 1000 miles since rebuild. It comes with a lot of history, both pre and post rebuild.

On test on arrival it performed wonderfully with a brilliant exhaust note – it’s cars like this that make me want to get up in the morning.
And of course being petrol it’s compliant with current LEZ emission regs.
