The Garage 1947 Riley 1½ Litre RMA
A particularly well presented early post-war Riley, offering the charm of pre-war craftsmanship combined with the improved refinement and handling of the highly regarded RM Series.
First registered on 12th January 1948, this example was almost certainly built in late 1947 and being one of the earlier cars, retaining a number of desirable period features.
The RM Series, introduced late in 1945, combined traditional Riley values with more advanced engineering, including independent front suspension and rack and pinion steering, giving these cars their well-known poise and enjoyable driving characteristics. In period, they were very much the choice of the discerning enthusiast.
This is a very smart, honest example that has been carefully maintained rather than fully restored, and pleasingly remains to original specification.
Notably, this car was in long-term family ownership since the 1970s, which is always reassuring. The current owner acquired this car last year but having seen our 2. 5 litre model which he missed when we sold it last time – was lucky enough to secure it – hence this car now being available.,
Recent attention has included new tyres, braking system work, cylinder head removal for hotspot blanking, and a replacement battery.
Being an early car, it retains some lovely original features, including Bedford cord upholstery, used only until 1948 due to leather shortages, along with the opening driver’s windscreen. From 1949 production was moved to the MG works at Abingdon so this car is a Coventry built example.
The history file includes the original Driver’s Handbook, a copy of The Riley Maintenance Manual by S V Haddleton, and period Riley RM Club magazines.
