1957 Land Rover Series I 88"

Highlights

  • Upgraded with a reconditioned 2.25-litre petrol engine with only 8,000 miles since rebuild
  • Fairey Overdrive fitted for improved cruising capability
  • Comprehensive restoration by Land Rover specialists Quothquan Workshops
  • Previously owned by Lt. Col. Simon R. Stanford-Tuck, son of a famous WW2 fighter ace
  • Attended six Series 1 Owners Club annual meetings, including the 70th anniversary rally at Red Dwarf Bay

The Appeal

The Land Rover Series I is where the legend began - the original go-anywhere vehicle that would evolve into one of the most iconic off-road vehicles ever created. After experimenting with several subtly different wheelbases, Rover settled on 88" -  a measurement that would remain in use for short-wheelbase Land Rovers throughout Series production until the introduction of the coil-spring Ninety in 1984.

This 1957 example has been thoughtfully maintained with a focus on preserving originality while ensuring mechanical reliability. Having benefited from specialist restoration work by Quothquan Workshops, and featuring a military-reconditioned 2.25-litre petrol engine with Fairey Overdrive, it combines authentic Series I character with improved usability. Its interesting provenance, including ownership by the son of a decorated WW2 fighter ace, adds to its appeal as a classic with both historical significance and practical capability.

History and Paperwork

  • First registered in 1957 and has had approximately eight former registered keepers, spending most of its life in the Gloucester/Dorset area
  • In current ownership since August 2010
  • Original registration book included with the documentation
  • Comprehensive history file including invoices and job sheets for all restoration work and subsequent maintenance
  • Previously owned from 1992 to 1996 by Lt. Col. Simon R. Stanford-Tuck, son of Wing Commander R. R. Stanford-Tuck, the decorated WW2 fighter pilot
  • Used for pleasure purposes only by the current owner
  • Attended six annual meetings of the Series 1 Owners Club, including the 70th anniversary rally at Red Dwarf Bay on Anglesey
  • Not used for the past 4 years but kept in dry storage and regularly started with short runs to maintain mechanical condition
  • Odometer shows 14,642 and although this accurately reflects the approximately 8,000 miles in the hands of the present owner it is unlikely to be correct
  • The vehicle's total mileage is not known due to its age and the fact that the original diesel engine was replaced in the 1970s
  • Exempt from MOT and road tax

The Condition

  • Paintwork colour changed at some time early in the life of the car and repainted in the present Bronze Green which shows the marks of use and a pleasant patina
  • Straight "Birmabright" alloy bodywork
  • Very smart canvas tilt in good condition
  • The vendor understands the bulkhead and chassis to be in sound order
  • Largely original interior that has not been modernised or refinished
  • Interior appears in smart condition for its age with matching age-commensurate wear
  • Discreet modern addition of a disguised double USB socket
