The Appeal

In 1964 Jaguar introduced a couple of significant changes to the E-Type that made these ‘mid period’ Series 1 cars popular with enthusiasts who prefer to drive and enjoy their cars rather than store and admire them. The engine received a power boost and a capacity increase to 4.2 litres, and perhaps more notably, the fully synchromesh manual gearbox arrived to replace the aged and cumbersome Moss unit. 
This highly original Old English White over burgundy leather 4.2 is one of the earliest built being car number 32 of the 139 RHD FHC cars built in 1964. A JDHT certificate plus history dating back to first registration verify the specification. 
The vendor’s family acquired the car in 2011 and he reports that it is a very original car that has received sympathetic restoration over the years. The condition is impressive and the car retains the notable features that make these final versions of the original ‘fared headlights’ Series 1 cars so desirable. Its history file supports the sense of a much-loved car, a highlight being ‘Best Jaguar’ at a Beaulieu Concours D’Elegance in 1978. There is evidence, photographic and written, of an engine rebuild in the mid 1990s. 
Despite only covering around 1,000 miles since the family acquired the car, it has been treated to considerable recent maintenance. A lot of money has been invested in maintenance with £2,700 spent in August 2024 alone on servicing, brake and carburettor work with specialist Moorland Classic Cars. It is fitted with a Vicarage power steering kit and Coopercraft brake upgrade. 
This is a really good and much-historied example of the improved 4.2L Series 1 car. It looks very usable but would equally grace a collection. 
The vendor says: 
“Understood to be the 32nd E-Type built with the larger 4.2-litre engine. It won ‘best Jaguar’ at the Beaulieu Concours d’Elegance in 1978, and has also starred at Goodwood. Driven sparingly in recent years, it would make a fine addition to any collection of iconic classic cars, and should prove to be a characterful weekend companion or classic continental tourer. 
“The car is complete with service manual, original spare parts catalogue, tool kit and spare wheel. I have in my possession an A4 file full of receipts, payments, pictures and the original green slip from when it was sold by Henlys in London. The paperwork is extensive. The car is in very good condition, the interior is original as we have chosen to keep it that way to preserve its heritage.
“It is a truly beautiful car that turns heads whenever it is driven.”

We want a smooth transaction just as much as you do and as such we run all UK-registered cars and motorbikes for sale on Car & Classic through an online HPI check to verify that they show no insurance database markers for damage or theft, and have no finance owing, allowing you to bid with confidence. 
✓ We also check whether vehicles are recorded as being written off as part of an insurance total loss claim at the time an advert is placed on Car & Classic and we helpfully provide write-off category labels (Cat C/D/S/N) for your assistance. However, the presence or absence of a label does not guarantee the vehicle’s status and it is always worthwhile carrying out your own  full vehicle history check before making an offer on a vehicle. 
✓ Buyers are responsible for vehicle collection 
or delivery. Importing vehicles may result in additional customs duties and import taxes so it’s worth checking beforehand..
