The Appeal
Trust Ferdinand Porsche to do things differently. While Ferruccio Lamborghini was busy moving from tractors to cars, Porsche was doing the opposite in the post-war years. His range of tractors was typically free-thinking, of which this gorgeous 308N is a prime example.
The 308N, also known as the ‘Super,’ was the ‘high-performance’ version of the 308 with a range of upgrades, mostly focused on more power. This 1958 ‘dual clutch’ example is a long-wheelbase model, which further adds to its considerable rarity. The vendor states just 50 of this model were built, but that hasn’t been verified.
Beneath the sort of stylish bodywork not normally associated with tractors lies a wealth of blue-sky thinking. Most notably, the clever hydraulic coupling between engine and gearbox provided smooth, clutchless changes and reduced transmission wear. It’s a simple solution to an age-old problem that also made the 308 easy to maintain and very durable.
This 308N was restored some years ago and appears to have covered just 2 hours of work since completion, although this is not confirmed. The bonnet and wings have been repainted in classic red, which is complemented by the chromework and the cream steel wheels. Throughout, it remains in very good order, the refurbished dials being just one of the many impressive details.
Other work has included replacing the lighting and wiring, and fitting a new starter motor and alternator. The clutch system has been replaced, and the transmission has been checked by a specialist. The vendor tells us that the 3-cylinder diesel engine has also been restored. It is said to remain matching numbers.
This is an exceptionally rare example of a hugely desirable tractor. We can’t remember seeing one this good in a long while.
